The Texas Cowboy Reunion, founded in 1930 as a tribute to the Texas cowboy, has grown in size over the years. It is a gathering of working cowhands and professional rodeo cowboys aimed at honoring their traditions in the rodeo arena.
In February 1930 a group of thirteen Stamford businessmen met to discuss establishing some type of local celebration to counteract the depression morale. Since Stamford was central to several large ranches, a rodeo seemed appropriate, and, in order to make it unique, the founders named it the Texas Cowboy Reunion and dedicated it to preserving the heritage of the typical West Texas cowboy. That first year was a success in every way. Ninety-eight cowboys participated in four events.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion features the traditional rodeo events and non-traditional events that have because a TCR tradition. , wild cow milking, steer riding, pioneer calf roping, and pioneer breakaway roping. For the traditional rodeo events, most of the contestants come from sanctioning rodeo associations with hopes of winning big money to advance to those association finals, where the non-traditional events feature contestants from all over that come to the TCR in hopes to in the prestigious championship.
The steer wrestling event is new to the TCR in 2017. It will just be one long go with the champion being crowned based on the fastest time. It will only be featured in the first three performances, there will not be steer wrestling in the championship round on Saturday night.
The team roping always brings out some of the big names in team roping. The team roping is two rounds, and both rounds are completed on Tuesday during slack. The team roping is not featured in any of the rodeo performances.
The breakaway roping was also added to the TCR in 2016. It features just one round of competition where the fastest time wins the championship. The breakaway slack is Tuesday morning and then it continues in the first three performances.
The tie-down calf roping is the largest event at the TCR, paying out over $10,000 last year. The calf ropers will compete in two rounds of competition with the top 10 advancing to the final round on Saturday night where the champion will be crowned. The first two rounds of competition will be either in the first three performances or in the calf roping slack, which is held Thursday and Friday morning.
